Learn to Meditate

Learn to Meditate is taught by a pair of our highly trained and qualified instructors, this half-day (3 hour) program suitable for beginners, as well as anyone who would like to refresh their understanding of the technique. Along with instruction, there will be periods of sitting and walking meditation.

Meditation instruction is not just for “new” meditators, instruction is also recommended as part of our ongoing practice. You are always welcome to come in and speak to an instructor about your regular practice and you may even ask to form a working relationship with the instructor of your choice. The human mind is by nature joyous, calm and very clear. In shamatha meditation we aren't creating a peaceful state we're letting our mind be as it is to begin with.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is a natural state of the human mind—at rest, open, alert. The basic meditation technique predates all religious traditions, though it is used in one way or another by each of them. Undertaken as a steady practice, meditation allows the mind to relax and settle. It encourages our inherent qualities of stability, clarity and mental strength to emerge.

Meditation is a way to make the mind more stable and clear. From this point of view, meditation is not purely a Buddhist practice; it's a practice that anyone can do. It doesn't tie in with a particular spiritual tradition. If we want to undo confusion, we're going to have to be responsible for learning what our own mind is and how it works, no matter what beliefs we hold.
